The Työmies Society came into being as the organization that published the Työmies (The Worker) newspaper, which was founded in 1903 in the United States and lasted until 1998. The chief function of the Työmies Society was the publication of newspapers, periodicals, and books for Finnish speaking Canadians and Americans in order to promote the ideas of the international working class and to educate Finnish immigrants.
Many Finnish people in Canada originally settled in Alaska (which was then a part of Russia) between 1835 and 1865, and would gradually move down the coast into British Columbia. Socialist miners from Finland would attempt to start a colony in British Columbia called Sointula between 1900 and 1905, though it was quick to collapse. Many Fins also helped to build the first Welland Canal in southern Ontario in 1829.
This collection consists of copies of the Työmies newspaper from the year 1908.

Note that this information contains descriptions of what is in the collection from the organization, but the microfilms presented here only contain reproductions of the Työmies newspapers for the year 1908 only.
La Työmies Society a été fondée aux États-Unis en 1903 en tant qu'organisation responsable de la publication du journal Työmies (Le travailleur). Elle subsista jusqu'en 1998. La principale fonction de la Työmies Society était de publier des journaux, des périodiques et des livres à l'intention des Canadiens et des Américains de langue finlandaise dans le but de promouvoir l'idéologie d'une classe ouvrière internationale et d'éduquer les immigrants finlandais.
Beaucoup de Finlandais immigrés au Canada entre 1835 et 1865 se sont d'abord établis en Alaska (qui, à l'époque, appartenait à la Russie). Ils se sont, par la suite, graduellement déplacés vers les côtes de la Colombie-Britannique. Entre 1900 et 1905, des mineurs socialistes nouvellement arrivés de Finlande ont tenté, sans succès, de fonder, en Colombie-Britannique, une colonie qu'ils appelèrent Sointula. En 1829, plusieurs Finlandais ont également contribué à la construction du premier canal Welland dans le sud de l'Ontario.
