The Progressive Conservative Party (PC) was the official name of Canada's Conservative or Tory political party at the federal level from 1942 to 2003. The name change was an attempt to turn left in order for the party to place itself on the path of wartime reform sentiment. It didn’t succeed as the governing Liberals of the time, along with the Co-Operative Commonwealth Federation, were moving further to the left, and the PCs support for conscription during the Second World War also made them less popular. However, the PCs eventually got into power in the late 1950s under the populist leadership of John Diefenbaker (1895 - 1979) and again in the 1980s under Brian Mulroney (b. 1939). Until the arrival of the Reform party (later Canadian Alliance) in the 1990s, the PC party tended to contain a mixture of Conservatives and right-leaning members of the former Progressive party.
This collection contains files created by the Carleton County local riding association and subsequently forwarded to the party’s headquarters.
