Description

Sub-series consists of registers of ships closed-out. From 1904 to 1964 the Ship Registration Division maintained a series of registers in which was recorded the name and registration details of vessels closed-out. Registers are arranged in chronological order and within each register in alphabetical order by name of vessel. This sub-series also includes one register (volume 3086) which shows, by port, the vessels remaining on the registry books of that port as well as those closed-out, 1926-1932. Beginning in 1965, the Ship Registration Division abandoned the registers in favour of ships' ledger cards. These cards contain the same registration information as the registers of vessels closed-out. They are arranged in chronological order and within each year in alphabetical order by name of vessel. Ships' ledger cards from 1965-1983 are available on reels T-11923 to T-11933, T-11858 to T-11870. Microfilm reels T-11573 to T-11601 contain copies of the ships' ledger cards of ships arranged in alphabetical order by name of ship. Researchers should be aware of the National Archives of Canada Ship Registration Database. All information from the card indexes have been entered into the database and information regarding individual vessels listed in shipping registers acquired by the NA after November 1992 are now directly added to the database. This speciality database is available through the Reference Services Division.

Finding aid 12-144 is a typed and handwritten container list relating to reels T-11871 to T-11922.
Finding aid 12-116 is a handwritten list relating to microfilm reels, for T-11573 - T-11601 indicating reel number and first and last ship name on reel; for T-11858 - T-11870 indicating reel number, year and first and last ship name on reel; for T-11923 - T-11933 indicating reel number, year and first and last letter on reel.
