This series of records consist of the incoming and outgoing correspondence that formed the greater part of the records maintained by the Railway Committee of the Privy Council. The correspondence covers all aspects of the Committee's activities and its relationship with railways, municipalities, organizations, corporations, and other bodies, as well as individuals. Subjects frequently encountered include accident reports and returns; reports of railway inspections; details of rates, tariffs, and tolls; and correspondence concerning passes, timetables, rules and regulations, and expropriations; complaints; petitions for legislation; and approval for routes, buildings, opening of railway lines for traffic, crossings, and crossing protection. Individual items range in extent from voluminous pieces of correspondence to brief transmittal notes. As the correspondence was not physically organized by subject or originator, an elaborate system was devised to enable the location of all correspondence relevant to a specific matter. Separate numbering systems were created for incoming and for outgoing correspondence.
Included in the these records are bound volumes in which correspondence received are registered by letter number. The entries include the following: date sent, date received, railway name, subject number, correspondent, and a summary of the contents of the letter.
