Sub-sub-series consists of census returns for the 1881 Canadian census. For the year 1881, only a microfilm copy of the first schedule - nominal return of the living - is available. The 1881 census returns in this sub-sub-series are from Prince Edward Island (Microfilm Reels C-13162 to C-13165), Nova Scotia (Microfilm Reels C-13165 to C-13177), New Brunswick (Microfilm Reels C-13177 to C-13187), Quebec (Microfilm Reels C-13187 to C-13226), Ontario (Microfilm Reels C-13226 to C-13282), Manitoba (Microfilm Reels C-13282 to C-13286), Saskatchewan and Alberta (Microfilm Reels C-13284 to C-13286) and British Columbia (Microfilm Reels C-13284 to C-13285).

Textual (microform) (Paper) Finding aid 31-1 is the published "Catalogue of Census Returns on Microfilm, 1666-1891," which provides an alphabetical listing by place name within each province. The information in this published catalogue has mostly been incorporated into LAC's online Census reference guide, however the published catalogue still provides a means of deciphering how districts changed during those census years.
Textual (microform) (Paper) Finding aid 31-8 is a typed "Finding Aid Census 1881" consisting of three parts: 1. an index of census districts in alphabetical order, 2. an index of sub-districts in alphabetical order, 3. a shelf-list of microfilm, indicating on which reel the returns for a district or sub-district may be found, as well as any missing schedules. The information in this finding aid has since been incorporated into LAC's online Census reference guide.
