The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), Canada's largest and most influential labour federation, was formed in 1956 by the merger of the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada (TLC) and the Canadian Congress of Labour (CCL). As of 2013, it represented the interests of over 3 million affiliated workers. The CLC is the umbrella organization for dozens of affiliated Canadian and international unions, as well as provincial federations of labour and regional labour councils.
This collection consists of files relating to the Union Label Trades Department. The Department was established at the CLC's founding in 1956. It was responsible for promoting, through the use of the union label, the demand for goods and services produced by union members. The Department also organized the Union Industries Show - a series of trade fairs where union-made products and services would be displayed. The collection contains correspondence, reports, minutes, convention records, contracts, promotional material, lists of exhibitors at shows, financial records, and other documents.
Finding Aid MSS492 is a list of textual records in the fonds. Part 1 is file list of containers 1 to 535. Part 2 is a file list of microfilm reels numbered from H-17 to H-923. Part 3 consists of printed reports from a database listing of files in containers 536 to 689, related microfilm copies, and microfilm reels M-9601 to M-9608; the database itself is temporarily available only in the Economic and Governance Archives Section, Canadian Archives Branch. Note that folders in containers 581 to 689 are only identified by the container and folder numbers; while a file list is included in each of these containers, researchers should nevertheless make note of the appropriate container and folder numbers while consulting Part 3 of the finding aid. From record: Series consists of files documenting correspondence and per capita tax payments from unions and municipal labour councils affiliated to the Union Label Trades Department, the department's executive meetings and conventions, requests for and distribution of union label materials, registration of union labels, the CLC's Union-Industries Show, and other aspects of the CLC's efforts to promote union label trades and services. Some files document the department prior to the 1956 merger, when it was part of the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada. The files contain correspondence, reports, minutes, convention records, contracts, promotional material, lists of exhibitors at shows, financial records, and other documents. - Persistent URL
