Description
Sub-series consists of paylists, nominal returns and accounts for the Upper Canada Militia during the War of 1812. The Adjutant General, in his role as intermediary between the Governor and the militia officers, was responsible for ensuring that the militia played its part in times of war and that militiamen and veterans were rewarded for their participation in armed conflicts. The names of personnel, the periods for which they were paid and the amounts they received are indicated on the paylists. The records are arranged geographically as follows: staff, flank companies, Incorporated Militia, prisoners of war, carpenters at Fort George, Embodied Militia at Nottawasaga, despatch riders, Kingston Road (Vol. 1); Incorporated Militia, Provincial Artificers, Provincial Royal Artillery Drivers (Vols. 2-3); Glengarry (Vol. 4); Stormont and Dundas (Vol. 5); Grenville and Leeds (Vol. 6); Sedentary, Incorporated and Embodied Militia of the Eastern and Johnstown Districts (Vols. 7-9); Colonel Richard Cartwright's Battalion at Kingston, returns of the Sedentary Militia in the Eastern, Johnstown and Midland Districts, militia stationed at Kingston (Vol. 10); Frontenac (Vol. 11); Addington (Vol. 12); Lennox (Vol. 13); Prince Edward (Vol. 14); Hastings, Northumberland and Durham (Vol. 15); York (Vols. 16-20); Lincoln (Vols. 21-24); Detachments of Lincoln, Oxford, Norfolk and Middlesex (Vols. 25-26); London and Western Districts (Vol. 27); Norfolk (Vols. 27-29); Artificers at Amherstburg, Western District Militia Rangers (Vol. 29); Oxford (Vol. 30); Middlesex (Vol. 31); Essex and Kent (Vol. 32). Also included in this sub-series are balance sheets, register of claims paid, estimates, abstracts of disbursements, forage and lodging accounts, vouchers, powers of attorney and miscellaneous accounts (Vols. 33-39).
La sous-série renferme les états de solde, certains relevés nominatifs et comptes de la milice du Haut-Canada durant la guerre de 1812. L'adjudant général servait d'intermédiaire privilégié entre le Gouverneur et les officiers de la milice et il était responsable pour la mobilisation de la milice en temps d'urgence et les indemnités pour leur service durant ces temps.Les états de soldes précisent les noms du personnel, la période d'emploi et les sommes reçues. Textual records (Electronic) Finding aid 9-6 includes an item list for volumes 1 to 32. The records are organized chronologically and alphabetically by county. The finding aid was created by Mr. Wilfred Lauber of the Ontario Genealogical Society and includes descriptions of the documents and page numbers.
