Description

The Office of the Registrar General registers proclamations, commissions of appointment, letters patent, writs and other documents issued under the Great Seal and the Privy Seal of Canada. It also registers all bonds, warrants of extradition, warrants for removal of prisoners, leases, releases, deeds of sale, surrenders and all other instruments requiring federal Crown registration. The Office of the Registrar General of Canada was established in 1868 with the creation of the Department of the Secretary of State. Prior to 1867, this responsibility was assumed by the Provincial Secretary of each province.
This collection consists of originals and registers containing copies of bonds, correspondence, indexes and returns from Upper and Lower Canada, the Province of Canada and the dominion of Canada.
Le Bureau du registraire général est responsable de l'enregistrement des proclamations, des commissions de nomination, des lettres patentes, des ordonnances et d'autres documents délivrés sous le grand sceau et le sceau privé du Canada. Il enregistre aussi tous les mandats d'extradition, les mandats de transfert de prisonniers, les obligations, les baux, les quittances, les actes de vente, les abandons et tous les autres instruments exigeant l'enregistrement de la Couronne. Le Bureau du registraire général du Canada a été établi en 1868 avec la création du ministère du Secrétaire d'État. Sub-series consists of bonds of Official Assignees and Trustees. The records are arranged as follows: Originals and Registers containing copies of bonds of Official Assignees under the Insolvent Act, Canada, 1875-1880, Volumes 407-408, 411, 433 and 1136, 3 reels; C-3994, C-3997, C-4005; Copies of bonds of Trustees under the Bankruptcy Act, Canada, 1920-1928, Volumes 624-625, 2 reels; C-4077 to C-4078.
Sub-series consists of revenue security bonds. The records are arranged as follows: originals and registers containing copies of bonds of Collectors of Customs, Landing Waiters and Searchers, Surveyors, Preventive Officers, Revenue Inspectors and Excisemen, Province of Canada and Canada; and list of Bonds of Collectors of Customs, Canada West, 1821 and 1829-1842 registered according to the provisions of 4 and 5 Victoria, Chapter 91, 1842, Upper Canada and Canada West. Volume 1072, 2 pages.
Sub-series consists of originals and registers containing copies of bonds issued to customs officials, surveyors, cullers, coroners, sheriffs, registrars, paymasters, land agents, inspectors, etc., Upper Canada, Province of Canada and Canada. The sub-series also includes annual returns of Public Officers' Bond registered showing the office for which the bond was issued, the names of the principals and sureties and the amount and date of each bond, Province of Canada and Canada. These records are arranged in chronological order, 1843-1931, Volumes 1081-1085
Sub-series consists of bonds of inspectors. The records are arranged as follows: registers containing copies of bonds of Inspectors of Fish and Fish Oils, Beef and Pork, Leather and Hides and Butter, Canada, 1874-1891; schedule of bonds of Inspectors of Licences, Upper Canada and Canada West, 1822 and 1834-1842 registered according to the provisions of 4 and 5 Victoria, Chapter 91, 1842. (Volume 1072, 1 page).
Sub-series consists of registers containing copies of bonds of Dominion Land Surveyors.
