Description
Before Confederation, there were two registrars general, who were appointed as the provincial secretaries of Upper Canada and Lower Canada. After 1867, the Secretary of State became the Registrar General and held that role until 1966, when an autonomous Department of the Registrar General was briefly formed. In 1967, the responsibility was given to the Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. When this position was discontinued in 1995, the Minister of Industry took over the role of Registrar General. Industry Canada has subsequently decentralized the function of the Office of the Registrar General.
The Registrar General of Canada is responsible for registering all letters patent, commissions, instruments, proclamations and any other documents that may, from time to time, be issued under the Great Seal of Canada, which is used to certify official state documents, or the Privy Seal of Canada. Such documents can include the appointments of senators, puisne justices and governors general. The Registrar General maintains a registry of the issued documents. The function of registering pardons was discontinued by the Registrar General and transferred to the National Parole Board in 1992. The Registrar General of Canada is also the custodian of the Seal of the Administrator of Canada and the Seal of the Registrar General of Canada, and while the Governor General is formally the keeper of the Great Seal of Canada, he or she normally entrusts the Registrar General with the seal's safekeeping.
This collection consists of a 105 page register containing a list of Notaries Public in Upper and Lower Canada, Canada East and Canada West.
No finding aids appear to be available on the microfilm reels. Also note that these collections are typically shared on the microfilm reels in question with other collections, so researchers will have to do some searching around to find the material that they are looking for.
