Description
Sub-series consists of registry files from the Quarantine Division, arranged in the file blocks 408-3-1 to 423-3-1 and dating from 1893 to 1930. They contain information on a wide variety of subjects, such as the coordination between the Division and the United States; the fumigation of ships at various coastal locations; and the administration of the service and its stations at Halifax, North Sydney, Saint John, William Head (Victoria), Prince Rupert, and Grosse Isle (Quebec). There are also subject files on the operations of the leprosariums at Bentick Island and D'Arcy Island, British Columbia, and a number of files on various diseases such as smallpox, diphtheria, influenza and typhus. Material on the Sick Mariners Service covers such subjects as the treatment of shipwrecked crews, sick mariners on the Great Lakes, Canadian prisoners of war in enemy hands, and liaison with associations such as the Shipowners Association of British Columbia, the Shipping Federation of Canada and the Allied Merchant Seamen's Club.
