Description
Until 1663, the Governor of New France was the absolute master of the Canadian justice system. However, the provost court of Quebec was the first degree of royal justice established in New France from 1663 by decision of King Louis XIV of France with the creation of the Sovereign Council of New France during the reform of the judiciary Canada. The court heard criminal and civil matters, and could also hear sentencing appeals. In addition, the court produced different documents: marriage contracts, oaths, appointments of trustees, guardians or curators, and various regulations.
This collection consists of documents created by the provost court of Quebec. The two most important are the records of the proceedings as well as spare parts.
