Description

Pierre Gamelin (1736 - 1796) was a storekeeper, trader, militia captain, and justice of the peace. At 22, he was the king’s storekeeper at Fort Frontenac (Kingston, Ont.), and he then served at Fort La Présentation (or Oswegatchie; now Ogdensburg, N.Y.). He moved to Montreal in 1762. Gamelin was accused of complicity in the affaire du Canada. In March 1762, the Paris Châtelet ordered his arrest, and he was tried in absentia. He was later acquitted. Gamelin had been in business as a wholesale and retail merchant since at least 1762. His account books, kept from 1766 to 1778, show that Canadians constituted 70 per cent of his clientele. In 1762, some of the British in Montreal took the initiative in bringing together about 30 citizens, of whom 10 were Canadians, with a view to founding a Masonic lodge. Wishing to form a connection with the upper-class British, Gamelin joined the group. However, in 1770, he also became the third churchwarden of the parish of Notre-Dame in Montreal. He was asked to give up one of his posts as the two were deemed incompatible.
Pierre-Ambroise Gamelin (1789-1856) was a notary in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec, from 1841 to 1852, a municipal clerk for the District of Saint-Jean from 1841 to 1845, as well as the secretary treasurer for the parish municipality of Saint-Jean-l’Évangéliste between 1845 and 1847. A street in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is named in his honour.
This collection includes account books of Pierre Gamelin including an original index or alphabetical list of clients, 1766-1781, and a short story about the creation of the world and other biblical stories. This collection also contains notarial acts and various documents concerning Pierre-Ambroise Gamelin (born 1789), 1814-1858; notebooks of tables of weights and measures and elementary arithmetic, 1802-1804.
Pierre Gamelin (1736-1796) était un garde-magasin, un négociant, un capitaine de milice et un juge de paix. À l’âge de 22 ans, il est devenu le garde-magasin du roi au Fort Frontenac (Kingston, Ont.), puis au Fort de La Présentation (ou Oswegatchie, aujourd’hui Ogdensburg, N.Y.). En 1762, il s’est installé à Montréal. Gamelin a été accusé de complicité dans l’Affaire du Canada. En mars 1762, le Châtelet de Paris ayant ordonné son arrestation, il a subi son procès par contumace, mais a été acquitté par la suite. Vers 1762, Gamelin s’est établi comme marchand grossiste et détaillant. Ses livres de comptes, tenus de 1766 à 1778, révèlent que les Canadiens composaient 70 pour cent de sa clientèle. En 1762 aussi, quelques Britanniques de Montréal avaient pris l’initiative de réunir une trentaine de citoyens, dont dix Canadiens, en vue de fonder une loge maçonnique. Désireux de se lier à la haute société anglaise, Gamelin s’est associé au groupe. Par contre, en 1770, ayant aussi été nommé troisième marguiller de la paroisse Notre-Dame de Montréal, Gamelin a été prié de se démettre de l’une ou l’autre de ces fonctions jugées incompatibles.
Pierre-Ambroise Gamelin (1789-1856) était notaire de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec, de 1841 à 1852, greffier du district municipal de Saint-Jean de 1841 à 1845, puis secrétaire-trésorier de la municipalité de la Paroisse Saint-Jean-l’Évangéliste de 1845 à 1847. Une rue de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu porte son nom.
Cette collection comprend les livres de comptes de Pierre Gamelin, l’original d’un index ou d’une liste alphabétique de ses clients (1766-1781), ainsi qu’un court récit de la création du monde et d’autres récits bibliques. Cette collection contient aussi des actes notariés et divers documents se rapportant à Pierre-Ambroise Gamelin (né 1789) et couvrant la période de 1814 à 1858, ainsi que des cahiers contenant des tables de poids et mesures et des notes d’arithmétique élémentaire (1802-1804).
