Description

Lionel Chevrier (1903 - 1987) was born in Cornwall, Ontario, and became a lawyer and politician. He was made a member of the bar in Ontario in 1928, and was named King's Counsel in 1939. He was also admitted to the bar of Quebec in 1957. He is best known, however, for being a federal Liberal cabinet minister. He was Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Munition and Supply from 1943 to 1945, and Minister of Transport from 1945 to 1954. He initially retired from politics in 1954 to become the first president of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority. He returned to politics in 1957 and briefly became President of the Privy Council that year. From 1957 to 1963, he was the official opposition House Leader and Liberal Party House Leader, and when the Liberals took power in 1963, he became the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of Canada for a year. He again resigned from politics in 1964 to become the Canadian High Commissioner in London. He held the position until 1967, and, that same year, was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. He additionally was the Ambassador and Commissioner General for state visits in 1967, president of the Canadian Mission to Francophone African Countries in 1968, and president of the Canadian Mission to consular posts in the United States. Canada Post issued a stamp in his honour in 1997.
The collection includes a scrapbook of newspaper and magazine clippings from Cornwall and elsewhere, in addition to articles relating to the federal elections of 1949, 1953 and 1957.

Lionel Chevrier (1903-1987), avocat et politicien, est né à Cornwall, Ontario. Admis au barreau ontarien en 1928, il fut nommé conseiller du roi en 1939. Il fut également admis au barreau du Québec en 1957. Mais il est surtout connu comme ministre libéral au fédéral. De 1943 à 1945, il fut l'adjoint parlementaire du ministre des Munitions et des Approvisionnements. Il fut aussi ministre des Transports de 1945 jusqu'à son retrait initial de la vie politique en 1954 pour devenir le premier président de l'Administration de la voie maritime du Saint-Laurent. En 1957, il effectua un retour à la vie politique et fut appelé à présider le Conseil privé pour une courte période la même année. De 1957 à 1963, il fut le leader de l'opposition officielle à la Chambre des communes et le leader en Chambre du Parti libéral. Lorsque les libéraux ont pris le pouvoir en 1963, il a occupé les fonctions de ministre de la Justice et de procureur général du Canada pour un an. En 1964, il se retira de nouveau de la politique pour devenir haut-commissaire du Canada à Londres jusqu'en 1967. C'est alors qu'il fut désigné Compagnon de l'Ordre du Canada et qu'il devint ambassadeur et commissaire général des visites d'état. En 1968, il fut nommé président de la Mission canadienne aux pays francophones d'Afrique, puis président de la Mission aux postes consulaires canadiens aux États-Unis. Postes Canada a émis un timbre à son effigie en 1997.
La collection comprend un album de coupures de journaux et de revues relatives à Cornwall et ailleurs, ainsi que des articles se rapportant aux élections fédérales de 1949, 1953 et 1957.
Le contenu de cette collection alterne entre l'anglais et le français.
