Description
The Toronto Trades Assembly was the first central labour organization in Canada and it was formed in 1871. It was active in speaking on behalf of the working people of the community, encouraging union organization, acting as a watchdog on working conditions, and occasionally mediating disputes between employers and employees. No record of the Toronto Trades Assembly exists after 1878. Three years later, a successor organization, the Toronto Trades and Labour Council, was formed to carry on the work begun by the Assembly. This new organization was also instrumental in setting up the Canadian Labour Congress in 1883. Throughout time, the name of the Toronto labour organization would change on numerous occasions due to mergers and other unions joining the council. In 1968, the organization named itself the Labour Council of Metropolitan Toronto following the amalgamation of several different municipalities into the city. The present day Toronto and York Region Labour Council appears to be a direct descendant of the Toronto Trades Assembly.
This collection consists of minutes and letterbooks of the Toronto Trades and Labour Council and the Toronto District Labour Council. Also included are newspaper clippings.
No finding aid is available on the microfilm reels.
