The Rt Rev. Dr. Charles Inglis (1734 - 1816) was an Irish clergyman who was consecrated the first Church of England bishop of the Diocese of Nova Scotia, which he was rewarded with after his devotion to the British Crown during the American Revolution (he had spent time in Delaware and New York City). The diocese initially included what are now the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Ontario.
This collection consists of papers of the Rt. Rev. Charles Inglis and of his son, the Rt. Rev. John Inglis (1777-1850), which are almost all of a public rather than a private character. They consist mainly of journals (including the Public Act Book or Register of the Diocese of Nova Scotia and its Dependencies, 1787-1837), 1775-1843, and letterbooks, 1786-1849, with a few other miscellaneous items, such as covenants, 1755-1787; sermons, 1761-1810; catalogues of books, 1768-1770; and deeds of presentation, 1836-1846. They exist in two main formats (which overlap to a considerable extent): transcripts (also available on reel C-2227) and microfilmed originals (reels A-709 to A-715)
The finding aid provides copies of the microfilm shelf lists both for the original papers at Lambeth Palace Library (on reels A-709 to A-715) and for the transcripts (on reel C-2227). In addition, it contains a copy of the calendar of the transcripts published in the Annual Reports of the National Archives of Canada for 1912 (Appendix M, pages 215-288) and 1913 (Appendix I, pages 227-283). The calendar has been slightly rearranged to correspond to the order of the material on microfilm reel C-2227, and annotated with volume numbers, etc., for the convenience of users. Also included in Finding Aid No. 671 is a comprehensive list of the whole collection, arranged categorically and chronologically. This comprehensive list facilitates the quick identification of material. It also permits the degree of overlap between the transcribed and microfilmed material to be easily ascertained and, consequently, the extent to which the calendar of the transcripts may also be used as a finding aid for the microfilmed originals. Used in conjunction with the microfilm shelf lists, it provides researchers with a simple means of locating material relevant to their interests.
