Description
In 1910, the Canadian Northern Railway Company entered the trans-Atlantic liner business with the founding of the Canadian Northern Steamship Company. The subsidiary acquired two liners and operated them under its Royal Line brand. The pair of ships were renamed as Royal Edward and Royal George, and were refitted for travel on the North Atlantic. When World War One broke out, the Royal Edward and Royal George were both requisitioned for use in transporting troops. In August 1915, a German submarine sank the Royal Edward, which had been transporting troops to Gallipoli from Avonmouth, England. The Royal George was sold to the Cunard Line and the vessel became an emigrant ship by 1920 before being scrapped altogether in 1922. Following a 1956 merger with the Canadian National Railway Company, the company operated a car ferry, two barges and two tugboats between Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia.
This collection consists of records created and maintained by the Canadian Northern Steamships, Limited and includes minutes from 1910 to 1926, as well as stock, bond and mortgage records from 1910 to 1956, and fiscal records from 1910 to 1914.
