Description

George Stephen (1829 - 1921) was a financier, philanthropist, and, most famously, the first president of the Canadian Pacific Railway between 1881 and 1888. He was initially born in Scotland, but immigrated to Canada in 1850. In 1873, he was elected a director of the Bank of Montreal and was its president from between 1876 to 1881. After being president of the CPR, Stephen left Canada for Britain in 1888. In 1891, he became the first Canadian to be elevated to the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He was created 1st Baron Mount Stephen in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, and he took the name from the peak named Mount Stephen in the Rocky Mountains that had been previously named in his honour and was adjacent to the CPR line.
This collection is made up of private and confidential correspondence. It includes 135 letters from Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald relating mainly to the CPR's finances, choice of routes, political considerations, and public attitudes to the project.

George Stephen (1829-1921), homme d'affaires et philanthrope, est surtout connu pour avoir été le premier président de la compagnie de chemins de fer Canadien Pacifique (CP) entre 1881 et 1888. Né en Écosse, il a émigré au Canada en 1850. En 1873, il fut élu membre du conseil d'administration de la Banque de Montréal, puis en assuma la présidence de 1876 à 1881. Après avoir été président du CP, Stephen quitta le Canada en 1888 pour s'établir en Angleterre. En 1891, il fut le premier Canadien à être élevé à la pairie du Royaume-Uni en devenant 1er baron Mount Stephen du Mount Stephen dans la province de la Colombie-Britannique et le Dominion du Canada. Ce titre lui fut inspiré par une montagne dans les Rocheuses déjà baptisée en son honneur et qui se trouvait à proximité d'une ligne du CP.
Cette collection est composée de sa correspondance privée et confidentielle. Les 135 lettres qui la composent ont été envoyées par le Premier ministre sir John A. Macdonald et concernent surtout les finances du CP, le choix des tracés, les considérations politiques et l'opinion publique face au projet.
